industrial arts

Hands-on trade education

Industrial arts refers to shop classes in secondary schools where students learn practical skills like woodworking, metalworking, drafting, and basic mechanics.

The term emerged when such training was seen as preparation for factory work.

Now largely replaced by "technology education," it emphasized hands-on making: I built a bookshelf in industrial arts.

The plural form is standard even when referring to a single class.
