indie film
Low-budget artistic movie
An indie film is a movie produced outside the major studio system, typically with a smaller budget and greater creative freedom.
The term suggests artistic ambition over commercial calculation: We caught an indie film at the festival.
Originally short for "independent film," the label now also describes a recognizable aesthetic—quirky, character-driven, often featuring lesser-known actors—whether or not the financing is truly independent.
