tentpole movie

A tentpole movie is a big-budget blockbuster that a studio relies on to support its financial year, like a central pole holding up a tent.

These films—typically franchise entries, superhero movies, or summer spectacles—are expected to generate enough revenue to offset riskier, smaller productions: The studio is banking on this tentpole movie to carry the whole summer slate.

Also called simply a tentpole.
