in between

Occupying the middle

In between describes something occupying the space or position separating two things: The house sits in between two larger buildings.

It can also indicate an intermediate state: not quite happy, not quite sad—somewhere in between.

Often redundant with between alone, but the fuller form emphasizes the middle position.
