on the outside
On the exterior
On the outside describes the exterior or outer surface of something: The house looks run-down on the outside.
It also means not belonging to a group or institution—someone on the outside lacks insider access or knowledge: On the outside, I had no idea how the company really operated.
For former prisoners, on the outside means life after release: He struggled to adjust to life on the outside.
