imposts

Taxes on imports

Imposts are taxes, duties, or levies—charges imposed by authority.

The word appears most often in legal or historical contexts: The Constitution grants Congress power to lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts, and excises.

In architecture, an impost is the horizontal molding or block from which an arch springs, the point where the curve meets the vertical support.
