icefishing

Angling through holes

Ice fishing is the practice of catching fish through holes cut in frozen lakes, rivers, or ponds during winter.

Anglers typically use specialized short rods, tip-ups, or handlines, and may fish from heated shelters called ice shanties or fish houses.

The activity requires ice thick enough to safely support a person's weight—generally at least four inches.

We went ice fishing on the lake every January when I was a kid.
