ice houses

Cold storage buildings

Ice houses are structures built to store ice year-round, typically insulated buildings where winter ice was packed in sawdust or straw to preserve it through summer months.

Before mechanical refrigeration, ice houses were essential for food preservation and cooling drinks.

The term also refers to small shelters fishermen place on frozen lakes for ice fishing: We set up the ice house and drilled through two feet of ice.
