icehouses
Cold storage buildings
Icehouses are buildings for storing ice, traditionally cut from frozen lakes and rivers in winter and packed in sawdust to last through warmer months.
Before mechanical refrigeration, icehouses were essential for preserving food: The estate's icehouse kept meat fresh all summer.
The term now sometimes refers to commercial establishments that sell bagged ice.
