hypothecate

Secure a loan

To hypothecate is to pledge property as security for a debt without transferring possession or title.

Unlike a pawn, where you hand over the item, hypothecation lets you keep using the asset—a homeowner hypothecates their house for a mortgage while still living in it.

The term appears mainly in legal, banking, and securities contexts: The broker hypothecated client securities as collateral for the firm's loan.
