hyperfixation

All-consuming mental focus

Hyperfixation is intense, consuming focus on a single interest, activity, or topic—often to the exclusion of other responsibilities or needs.

The term originated in discussions of ADHD and autism, where such episodes are common: I've been in hyperfixation mode on this video game for three days.

Unlike casual enthusiasm, hyperfixation implies difficulty disengaging even when you want or need to.
