doom-scrolling
Compulsive bad-news browsing
Doom-scrolling is compulsively consuming negative news or social media content, unable to stop despite growing anxiety or distress.
The term emerged during periods of crisis when people found themselves endlessly scrolling through bleak headlines: I was doom-scrolling Twitter until 2 a.m.
Also spelled doomscrolling.
