hostesses

Women receiving guests

Hostesses is the plural of hostess, a woman who receives or entertains guests.

A hostess welcomes visitors to her home, or professionally seats diners at a restaurant: The hostesses were overwhelmed during the dinner rush.

The term also applies to women who entertain patrons at bars or clubs, sometimes with sexual connotations.

In American English, flight attendants were once called stewardesses or hostesses.
