holy wells
Blessed water sources
Holy wells are natural springs or wells believed to have sacred or healing properties, often associated with saints, pre-Christian deities, or miraculous events.
Found throughout Britain, Ireland, and parts of Europe, they were sites of pilgrimage where visitors sought cures, left offerings, or performed rituals.
Many were Christianized from earlier pagan traditions: Pilgrims still tie cloth strips to the tree beside the holy well.
