hockey stop

Sudden ice halt

A hockey stop is a braking technique on ice skates or inline skates where the skater turns both skates perpendicular to the direction of travel, scraping the edges against the surface to halt quickly.

The move produces a characteristic spray of ice shavings.

Named for its essential role in hockey, where rapid stops and direction changes are constant.
