axel
Ice leap, spinning
An axel is a figure skating jump where the skater takes off from a forward outside edge, rotates in the air, and lands on the back outside edge of the opposite foot.
Unlike other jumps, the forward takeoff adds an extra half-rotation, making a single axel actually one and a half revolutions: She finally landed her double axel in competition.
Named for Norwegian skater Axel Paulsen. (Capitalized Axel is a given name.)
