hobnails

Sole grip hardware

Hobnails are short nails with large heads, driven into the soles of boots to increase durability and traction.

Before modern rubber soles, heavy work boots and military footwear were reinforced this way: hobnail boots.

The verb hobnail means to furnish with such nails.

Hobnailed also describes a decorative pattern of raised bumps resembling nail heads: hobnail glass.
