Hemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels in and around the anus, causing discomfort, itching, and sometimes bleeding.
Nearly everyone develops them at some point, typically from straining during bowel movements, pregnancy, or prolonged sitting.
The word often appears in plural even when referring to a single swollen vein: The doctor said it's just hemorrhoids.
