hemodilution

Plasma volume increase

Hemodilution is the thinning of blood by an increase in fluid relative to red blood cells.

It occurs naturally during pregnancy or from intravenous fluids, and can be induced deliberately before surgery to reduce the loss of red cells: The patient underwent hemodilution prior to the procedure.

The British spelling is haemodilution.
