cardiopulmonary bypass
Surgical circulation replacement
Cardiopulmonary bypass is a surgical technique that temporarily takes over the functions of the heart and lungs, diverting blood through a machine that oxygenates it and pumps it back into the body.
This allows surgeons to operate on a still, bloodless heart: The patient was placed on cardiopulmonary bypass for the valve replacement.
Often shortened to bypass in medical contexts.
