backflow
Upstream liquid movement
Backflow is the unwanted reverse movement of liquid or gas through a pipe or system, opposite to its intended direction.
In plumbing, backflow can contaminate clean water supplies when pressure changes allow sewage or other pollutants to flow backward: The city issued a boil-water notice after backflow was detected.
Backflow preventers are devices installed to stop this reversal.
