headstocks
Lathe spindle housings
Headstocks are the fixed ends of lathes that house the spindle and driving mechanism—the part that holds and rotates the workpiece.
In stringed instruments like guitars and violins, the headstock is the section at the end of the neck where the tuning pegs are mounted: The guitar's headstock snapped when it fell.
The term also appears in mining for the frame structure above a shaft.
