hardtops

Non-convertible car bodies

Hardtops are automobiles with a rigid roof, as distinguished from convertibles or soft-top vehicles.

The term originally described cars designed to look like convertibles—with no visible pillar between the front and rear side windows—while having a permanent metal roof.

She preferred hardtops to convertibles because they were quieter on the highway.

The word also applies to removable rigid roof panels on some vehicles, particularly Jeeps and sports cars.
