hand-over-hand
Sequential grip switching
Hand-over-hand describes a method of pulling or climbing where one hand reaches forward, grips, then the other hand reaches past it in alternating succession: She pulled the rope hand-over-hand.
The technique applies to climbing ropes, hauling lines, or scaling walls.
It also describes a style of turning a steering wheel with alternating hands.
