hammocks

Suspended sleeping slings

Hammocks are hanging beds made of fabric or netting, suspended between two points—typically trees or posts.

They originated in the Caribbean and became standard sleeping equipment on sailing ships, where swinging with the vessel's motion proved more comfortable than fixed bunks.

Today hammocks serve mostly for outdoor leisure: We spent the afternoon reading in hammocks on the porch.
