naval ranks
Seafaring military titles
Naval ranks are the hierarchical titles that designate position and authority in a navy.
They typically divide into commissioned officers (from ensign or lieutenant up through admiral), warrant officers, and enlisted personnel (from seaman through chief petty officer).
Ranks vary by country but share common structures inherited from British and American naval traditions: She rose through the naval ranks to become a rear admiral.
