futons
Foldable sofa-beds
Futons are low, padded mattresses that can serve as both sofa and bed.
The Japanese original sits directly on the floor and folds for storage.
Western futons typically have a wooden or metal frame that converts between seating and sleeping positions: The apartment was too small for a real bed, so I got a futon.
They're associated with college dorms and first apartments.
