A hammerlock is a wrestling hold in which an opponent's arm is bent behind their back and twisted upward, causing pain and limiting movement.
The plural hammerlocks refers to multiple instances of this hold or its repeated application: He escaped two hammerlocks before getting pinned.
Figuratively, having someone in a hammerlock means having them in a position of total control.
