gi

Karate class uniform

A gi is the traditional uniform worn in Japanese martial arts—judo, karate, aikido, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

It consists of a loose jacket, pants, and a belt indicating rank.

The garment is designed for durability, since opponents grab and pull the fabric during grappling: He grabbed my gi and threw me to the mat.

Also spelled ghi or ghee in some contexts.
