half-staff

Flag's grieving height

Half-staff describes a flag flown below the top of its pole as a sign of mourning or respect for the dead.

Government officials order flags to half-staff after deaths of prominent figures or national tragedies: Flags flew at half-staff for a week after the president's death.

Also called half-mast, though half-staff is standard in American usage for land-based flagpoles.
