half-mast
Flag honoring death
Half-mast describes a flag flown partway down its pole as a sign of mourning or respect for the dead: Flags flew at half-mast for the fallen soldiers.
The term extends to anything drooping or at partial height: His eyelids were at half-mast.
Half-staff is the more common American term, especially in official contexts, though both are widely understood.
