hair cell
Inner ear receptor
Hair cells are sensory receptors in the inner ear that convert sound vibrations and head movements into electrical signals the brain can interpret.
Named for the tiny hair-like projections (stereocilia) on their surface, these cells enable hearing and balance.
Damage to hair cells from loud noise or aging causes permanent hearing loss, as humans cannot regenerate them.
