gybed

Shifted the boom

Gybed is the past tense of gybe (also spelled jibe), a sailing maneuver where a boat turns so that the stern passes through the wind, causing the boom and sail to swing from one side to the other.

Unlike tacking, which turns the bow through the wind, gybing happens when sailing downwind: We gybed around the marker and headed for shore.
