quantum jump

Abrupt energy transition

A quantum jump is an abrupt transition from one state to another, originally describing electrons moving between energy levels without passing through intermediate states.

The phrase has been adopted figuratively to mean any sudden, dramatic advance: The new technology represents a quantum jump in processing power.

Often used interchangeably with quantum leap.
