zero-point

Ground state energy

Zero-point refers to the lowest possible energy state of a quantum system, which according to quantum mechanics is never truly zero—particles retain some irreducible motion even at absolute zero temperature.

The term appears in physics discussions of zero-point energy and zero-point fluctuations.

More loosely, zero-point can mean a starting baseline or reference level from which measurements begin.
