engross

Seize all attention

To engross is to absorb someone's complete attention: She was engrossed in her book and didn't hear the doorbell.

The word suggests being so captivated that everything else fades away.

In legal and historical contexts, engross means to write out a document in formal script, or to acquire large quantities of something—especially commodities—in order to control supply.
