grieve

Feel profound sorrow

Grieve means to feel deep sorrow, especially over a death: She grieved for months after losing her father.

The grief may be private or expressed openly.

You can grieve a person, a loss, or an abstraction: grieving the end of a relationship, grieving what might have been.

To grieve someone is to cause them distress, though this use is now rare outside formal contexts like labor disputes, where filing a grievance is called grieving.
