marble quarry
Sculptor's stone source
A marble quarry is a site where marble is extracted from the earth, typically through open-pit mining that cuts into hillsides or mountainsides.
Unlike underground mines, quarries expose large faces of stone that workers cut into blocks using wire saws and wedges.
Famous marble quarries include those at Carrara, Italy, which supplied stone for Michelangelo's sculptures.
