grammar schools

Exam-entry public schools

Grammar schools are publicly funded secondary schools in England that select students by academic ability, typically through an entrance exam at age eleven.

The term originally referred to schools teaching Latin grammar.

In American usage, grammar school is an old-fashioned term for elementary school: I walked to grammar school every morning.
