gouaches

Opaque water paints

Gouaches is the plural of gouache, a type of opaque watercolor paint made with pigment, water, and a binding agent like gum arabic.

Unlike transparent watercolors, gouache dries to a matte, velvety finish that completely covers the surface beneath it.

The term also refers to paintings made with this medium: The gallery displayed several gouaches from the artist's early period.
