general cargo

Assorted shipped goods

General cargo is goods shipped as individual units rather than in bulk or containers—crates, barrels, pallets, machinery, vehicles.

Before containerization transformed shipping in the mid-twentieth century, most freight moved as general cargo, loaded piece by piece into a ship's hold.

The term now often distinguishes miscellaneous freight from specialized categories like liquid bulk or refrigerated goods.
