dunnage

Shipping container stuffing

Dunnage is loose material—wood, padding, mats, or inflatable bags—used to protect cargo during shipping.

It fills gaps, prevents shifting, and cushions goods against damage: They packed dunnage around the crates before the container was sealed.

The term extends to any packing material or, informally, to personal belongings or baggage.
