fungo
Self-tossed and batted
A fungo is a fly ball hit during baseball practice, struck by a coach or player who tosses the ball up and hits it himself rather than receiving a pitch.
The technique and the specially designed lightweight bat used for it share the name: He grabbed a fungo and started hitting grounders to the infielders.
The word's origin is obscure.
