tyro
Still learning ropes
A tyro is a beginner or novice—someone new to a skill, field, or activity.
The word carries no negative connotation; it simply marks inexperience: As a tyro in the kitchen, she stuck to simple recipes.
Tyro appears more often in writing than speech, with a slightly formal or literary flavor.
