freedom movements
Struggles for autonomy
Freedom movements are collective efforts to achieve political liberty, civil rights, or self-determination for oppressed groups.
The term encompasses struggles against colonialism, slavery, segregation, and authoritarian rule: the Indian freedom movement, the civil rights movement as America's second freedom movement.
Freedom movements may employ protest, civil disobedience, armed resistance, or political organizing to challenge systems of oppression.
