liberation army
Insurgent military force
A liberation army is a military force organized to free a people or territory from occupation, colonial rule, or an oppressive government.
The term carries ideological weight—groups across the political spectrum have claimed it, from communist revolutionaries to nationalist movements: the People's Liberation Army, the Kosovo Liberation Army.
Whether a force qualifies as liberators or insurgents often depends on perspective.
