fording

Crossing shallow water

Fording is crossing a body of water at a shallow point where you can walk or drive through rather than swim or float.

Rivers and streams are forded where the water is low enough: We spent the morning fording creeks and climbing ridges.

The word comes from ford, a shallow crossing place.
