forced disappearance

Government-sanctioned vanishing act

Forced disappearance is the abduction or detention of a person by state agents or their proxies, followed by refusal to acknowledge the act or reveal the victim's fate.

It became a signature tactic of authoritarian regimes in Latin America during the 1970s and 1980s, where thousands were "disappeared" by military governments.

The crime is distinct from ordinary kidnapping because official denial makes legal recourse nearly impossible: The regime's forced disappearances left families without answers for decades.

Under international law, forced disappearance is considered a crime against humanity when practiced systematically.
