footsoldiers

Rank and file

Foot soldiers are infantry—military personnel who fight on foot rather than mounted or in vehicles.

The term extends figuratively to rank-and-file workers who do the unglamorous groundwork for an organization or cause: The campaign's foot soldiers knocked on thousands of doors.
