fly-over

Bridge over highway

A fly-over is a flight path that passes over a location, especially a ceremonial one by military aircraft at public events: The air show ended with a fly-over of vintage bombers.

In British English, a flyover is an overpass—a bridge carrying one road over another.

As an adjective, flyover describes the vast middle regions of the United States that coastal travelers pass over without stopping: flyover country, flyover states.

The term often carries condescension toward these areas.
